Do American teenagers really wait until 21 to drink?

I'm in the UK and the drinking age is 18 here, but most people start drinking before then.

Is 21 a realistic age to expect people to start drinking at? I can't imagine going to university and not being allowed to drink, it just seems weird to me.

Is it actually enforced? Do you think 21 is too old, or do you agree with the rule?

=]Do American teenagers really wait until 21 to drink?
Most teens start drinking in their upper teen years, but some do wait until they are of the legal age. I'm in my first year of high school (fourteen years old) and there are MANY kids who talk about drinking. I go to Italy every other summer, and have met teens there who ask my sister(sixteen) and I if we wanted to go clubbing with them. I have a sixteen year old cousin who lives there and her and her friends get drinks when they go out. I know some people who think that law should switch, they think you should be able to drink at 16, and drive at 21, that way you have years to drink and experiment before you get in a car. The drunk driving would go down by quite a bit. I think that if you can go into the military, you should be able to have a drink.

I have tried alcohol before and hated it, so I'm not worried about getting caught drinking. I have friends(more like acquaintances) who love to get wasted, and they're fourteen, sometimes even younger! I think that the law is enforced, but definitely not as strong as some others. There are plenty of teenagers at my high school that have fake ids and buy alcohol. I think that it's a good age, but I also see the reasons for it being lowered. I think 18 is a good age, because I agree with the people who say if they can fight in the army they should be able to have a drink.Do American teenagers really wait until 21 to drink?
It is enforced, but it doesn't mean it is controlled. A lot of teens drink and they have debated if they should lower the age or not. They think if they lowered it, fewer teens will drink because some feel that drinking under 21 is a ';rebellious daring act.'; Also it is at 21 because supposedly we can't handle drinking without getting drunk, as in other countries and cultures they can. but I think that is complete bull. I personally don't like alcohol unless if it is the fruity kind (coincidental, eh?), however, I mix orange juice with my wine. You should try it. Yeah I went and checked out that question that I asked about my lack of excitement for turning 18 and you seemed to be confused about this topic....lol
ok, well i didn't wait till i was 21 to drink i started when i was seventeen. And yes, it is enforced. I was just lucky enough to never get caught. Now i am 21 and am able to do it legally but i was also careful about it. I only did it with ppl i knew and trusted and in the comfort of a house i knew. I never let myself get too bad with the exception of maybe once or twice which i regretted right away in the morning lol. I think People are still a bit immature at 18 to be drinking and 21 is better hypothetically. but teens will find a way to drink regardless of drinking age.

Oh and the only time a person under the age 21 is able to drink legaly is when with their guardian and were given permission by them. but that also depends on the place. Some places will refuse either way. Its mostly like weddings and family reunions that its ok.
Some teenagers do, some of them don't.

It is enforced when possible. I do not think 21 is too old. There is no reason for people under 21 to drink. There are so many car accidents in which people under 21 were drinking and acted irresponsibly. Most teenagers are not responsible enough to drink, there is binge drinking and drinking games, and young adults who drink are more likely to do drugs, which then ruins their life.
Legally, only 21 years or older is allowed to buy alochol drinks. Of course some people don't follow the rules and have other people buy the drinks for them. I highly doubt anyone that drinks waited until they were legal age to drink.

As for myself, I'm 18, and have never drunk anything alcoholic or smoked.

Some people say they should lower the drinking age because if a 18 year old is old enough to serve our country, they should be old enough to drink.

At 18, you can cigarettes too!
Yes, it is enforced. However, most teens will start drinking before they are 21 (usually in high school). Yes, I can imagine going to university and not drinking. And you know what? It's really not that big of a deal. I like to have a couple drinks now and then, but it's not like alcohol is the greatest thing in the universe. I waited.

As for how old is old enough, well, that's tricky. Even when people turn 21, a lot of them still tend to be huge idiots when it comes to drinking. They go out and get loaded and puke all over themselves and do stupid crap. In the US, alcohol abuse is probably worst in universities, and then it declines as people get older.

My husband and I live in the UK now, and I've seen way more drunk people here than I ever did back home in the states. I think alcohol abuse may be more widespread in the UK.
No just about all kids have at least a drink before their 21st birthday. A lot of the loser kids start really young, like 13-14, because they feel like they need to prove themselves to similar losers who don't matter. Others start at a better age like 18, because you're at least an adult by then, and responsible for yourself. That's the age I started at, especially since my husband (fiancee at the time) was old enough to get liquor for us.
In the USA it is illegal to drink if you are younger than 21. Most people start drinking at age 18 or earlier even though its illegal. Cops are trying to enforce that law but the only real restrictions are that if u want to buy alcohol u have to show ID (which doesn't always work because ppl make fake ID's). Also if you are found driving while drunk you will go to jail. But those restrictions don't really stop ppl. I don't think 21 is too old because even though ppl that r younger than that drink, they are very irresponsible about it and they put others in danger.

Hope this helped! :)
LMFAO go to a university and not drink?

thats all they do at parties.

i started drinking at 13.

im completely against it cause teenagers are only going to do what they are not alloweed to do.

and drinking is okay in moderation. :)

hahhahaha i love that thought people not drinking in college.

suchaa lie. :)
There are sooo many kids in my high school drink, me being one of them.

I wish it was 18 too, but your body isn't fully developed at 18

But yes in America you can get arrested for underaged drinking and anyone buying alcohol for minors will get in huge trouble.
Most people I know started drinking in their teens. I started around 16 (although my mom is from the UK and allowed me a drink now and then because she felt it was important to know the effects of drinking) my sister waited until she was 21, so yes some people do wait but I think most do not.

The over 21 rule is enforced, you need to have ID to buy alcohol and they ID you to get into a bar. In university there's usually someone over 21 in almost every group who can buy beer for everyone.
I had my first drunk night when I was 13.

Bad, I know. Haha.

The law is definitely enforced though. If you get caught underage drinking, you get into a shitload of trouble. I think 21 is a little high, but I can see why they would make it that age. Maybe because kids start driving at 16 and 17, so they want to try and prevent drunk drivers?
nobody waits until their 21.

most people drink in their early teens or

whenever they could get their hands on it.

it is enforced %26amp;%26amp; yea being realistic 21 is too old

but they are trying to keep kids from becoming addicted to it

so i guess that's one good thing.
No. They definitely drink before then. Most do, I can't generalize. It was more fun to drink when I was younger than 21. Then when I turned 21 I lost interest. I don't really drink. I'm thinking is the fact of doing something you're not supposed to that makes it fun for some teens.
ya a lot of teens drink. i don't but i heard about a lot from kids at school. but most of the time i think their just say it to be ';cool';.

Truly i think 21 is too old because a kid can go to war and die at the age of 18 but cant drink.
ok

ur kidding right??

teen pregnancy is MOST common there and thats usually caused by drinking.

so u do the math.

p.s i am 15 and from london,england.

and i drink when i go out,but i control myself..and trust ppl there..that are with me..so i wont go off having sex, bcoz thats just not me for now.
The simple answer is no. Probably 90% of teens start drinking before 21

College is infamous for drinking parties.

is it ENFORCED? Well OF COURSE. It's the law and anyone caught breaking the law will be punished!!!

I'm not sure how the UK treats their law...!
Yup!

It was fun in Europe, without a real drinking age (I was in Italy)...

I think that just making the age older encourages more kids to want to break the rules and drink anyway so I don't think it helps.
The ones i know don't wait. I think 21 is perfect because it has to do with the developement of your brain. Don't worry about the US drinking age if you don't live here.
You are supposed to wait until you are 21 to drink but most teenagers drink before then. Most teenagers dont listen or care about the effects of drinking So most do and then die earlyer that those of us who choose not to drink
im 14 and i actually had my first drink last night (that my parents gave to me) but it wasnt enough to get drunk

yes i think 21 is too old..they should change it to 18
I think 21 is too old.

If they keep upping the age, the more likely it is for teens to underage drink. They won't wanna wait too long
LAWL.

are you joking.

epic fail question.

the answer is no.
Most teens start drinking in their early teens.
21 is fair

though most people do not care abotu the law
HA. HA. HA. NO!
Um no.I only know a very few people who waited until they were 21 to even take a sip.
Uh no, myabe the goody ones don't drink.
21 is not too old.
